    Description (by Rebecca)

Which ointment to choose? There are lots of ointments on the market, and they're all made of the same stuff mostly - white petrolatum and mineral oil. The main thing that distinguishes one product from another is the proportions of those two ingredients. Refresh PM is the most balanced (57.3%, 42.5% respectively) while Genteal and Systane ointments are mostly white petrolatum (94%). Retaine PM is in between (80%/20%). For plenty of people the differences may not matter, but certainly I've noticed some over the years who find that the differences matter for their purposes, so comparison shopping can be helpful.

Another consideration is lanolin alcohol. Most lubricant eye ointments contain it; the two exceptions are Bausch & Lomb Soothe and Retaine PM.

Should I be using ointment at all? Ointments are attractive for overnight use due to their staying power - unlike polymer drops and gel drops, they don't just dissolve and dissipate in a short time. However, not everyone who has moderate to severe overnight dry eye symptoms therefore has to use an ointment. Many people can get by with a less viscous (not to mention non-greasy!) lubricant, such as a polymer gel or even gel drop, if they also use some kind of night protection (shield, mask, goggle, etc.).

    Helps with nocturnal lagophthalmos

I bought this and the Systane Nighttime Lubricant Eye Ointment and have flip flopped between the two for about a week or two now. I think they're about the same honestly. I know they have slightly different ratios of mineral oil / petrolatum content, but if I were to do a "blind taste test" where I didn't know which ointment you were giving me, I wouldn't have the slightest clue which one I was using. Either way, my eyes aren't as dry when I wake up and I don't have to keep a bunch of eye drops next to my bed anymore. I used to have to reach for a whole vial or two of drops as soon as I woke up. Now I maybe use a drop or two if I really feel like it. Both of the ointments are good. If I notice a difference later on I'll update both of my reviews.

Nice option for preservative-free PM drops

I have reached the point where I can’t use any drops/gels/ointments with any preservatives whatsoever, and so Retaine PM seems to be one of only two options left for me if I need something more viscous than drops.

It does soothe my irritated eyes; however, in times when my chronic conjunctivitis acts up or I have an allergic reaction to something it can make everything worse (maybe because it’s so thick the lids/eyes just can’t tolerate that pressure when so irritated?).

I dislike ointments because they seem so dang hard to get into the spot where I need them to go, but at least this is an option and it does work.

    DryEyeShop

    Hi there,

Thank you for your review! Please let us know if you could use any assistance with more product recommendations. We were a little puzzled about the preservative comment, as, in general, lubricant ointments are not preserved. We stock a number number of preservative-free nighttime ointments in addition to Retaine PM. Nighttime gels, on the other hand, are preserved. Regarding the reaction, if you haven't already, bring this up with your eye doctor. In our experience, petrolatum, which is in almost all ointments, can be irritating to some people.

    Best,

    Aidan

    Good for overnight while sleeping

I used to use TheraTear gels but have found that they are making my eyes feel more gritty/sandy so I tried the Retaine PM Nighttime Ointment. The ointment isn't as easy to apply as a gel drop so there is a learning curve there. The ointment doesn't feel like a liquid bath for my eyes and doesn't remove all of my dry eye symptoms but I do notice that I have more tear flow during the day after I use the ointment so something must be working. It is worth a try if you are still struggling.
