    Description (by Rebecca)

This is a multi-purpose solution in the Bausch & Lomb "Boston" product line specifically for rigid gas permeable lenses.

Simplus is a multi purpose solution. In the context of scleral lenses however, where disinfection is usually done with a hydrogen peroxide system rather than a multipurpose solution, Simplus is used by some as a rub cleaner as an alternative to Lobob ESC. I am not fond of it, and I know a lot of ECPs and manufacturers that aren't crazy about it either, but it's widely enough used that I needed to stock it here.

Some notes for specific lens types - but please always remember to check with your ECP:

    • EyePrintPro with Hydra-PEG: Simplus is an acceptable cleaning solution for these, though Unique pH is the preferred solution. It's important to note that alcohol-containing cleaners e.g. Lobob ESC are not acceptable for use with lenses with Hydra-PEG coating.
    • PROSE: At least as of this writing (April 2017) Simplus is listed by BostonSight as an acceptable daily rub cleaner for PROSE. (Not to be confused with overnight disinfection!)

SAFETY NOTE: As with ALL multi-purpose solutions, DO NOT put this solution in the 'bowl' of your scleral lens. It is strictly for cleaning and disinfection, not filling.

    Description (from the manufacturer's literature)

I really like this product. Have used it for at least 2 years

This product simplifies my scleral lens wearing regimen. I use it every night in my lens case, except for the once a week cleaning with Clear Care Plus. In the morning, I just rinse with Purilens Plus, put a couple drops of Refresh Plus in the lens, fill it the rest of the way with Purilens Plus and then insert the lens in my eye. The Simplus instructions indicate to soak lenses for at least 4 hours. If I need to put them back in before the 4 hours is up, I gently rub the lenses in the Simplus and rinse with Purilens and fill the lens as usual before inserting in my eye. The Simplus is a little sticky, but I don’t use it for the rub cleaning that much so it doesn’t bother me. Also, it does cushion my lenses even after the rinsing in Purilens so it makes lens wearing very comfortable for me. I can wear my lenses easily 12 hours a day or more if needed.

    Boston Simplus Multi-Action Solution

I chose this product after finishing the bottle of Menicon Unique pH provided by my optometrist and before The Dry Eye Shop began stocking Unique pH.

Pros: viscous, convenient 3.5 oz. bottle, easy-to-open flip-top bottle cap which seems to close firmly

Cons: messy to use in the morning, dried solution around cap presents an unappealing sight, bottle does not meet TSA airline liquid travel size restriction

I am a new (April 2017) scleral lens user after 20 plus years of mostly RGP, then hybrid RGP contact lens use. I wear my lenses 14-16 hours per day, every day.

While Boston Simplus is a fine product I prefer not to use it due to its requirement to clean the lenses AFTER soaking overnight (or at least four hours) in the solution. This leads to a messy situation in the morning, as Boston Simplus is viscous (thick), you've got it in the palm of one hand to clean the lenses, and the fingers of the other hand have the solution on them from removing the lenses from the case and digitaly cleaning the lenses (using a finger to rub the lenses). Then you have to use the lens insertion tool (for sclereal lens users) AND handle the bottle of saline to rinse the lenses, all with Boston Simplus on your hands.

I have also found that following the Boston Simplus cleaning instructions is imperative - rub each lens for 20 seconds. Not doing so, at least with my scleral lenses, leads to uncomfortable lenses. NOTE FROM REBECCA: I just love detailed descriptions like this! So…
