Escape Sleep Mask [Freebie]

About freebies

Freebies are products that have been returned to us - often unused, sometimes gently used. Rather than discard them, we make them available here at no charge. (We have many customers on fixed incomes for whom the costs of these types of supplies are a hardship.)

Honor system here - all are welcome, but those in need are particularly welcome. If you can afford to purchase, please consider leaving it for someone who can't.

Packaging material for this product is torn but the mask itself is in good shape.

Description (by Rebecca)

The Escape is a high end sleep mask. It is a very structured mask, thickly padded, and shaped in such a way that it will not easily move around.  The strap has velcro and adjusts securely.

The Escape is a longtime favorite as an 'alternative' tool for dry eye at night. Sleep masks are normally used to block light in order to improve sleep, but of course in the dry eye world, they are sometimes used to block airflow over the eyes during the night, particularly when ceiling fans and heat or a/c are a concern. To the extent a sleep mask blocks light, it will also block most airflow, so it's a natural extension of the function. Sleep masks do not, however help specifically with moisture retention.

Suggested best uses

  • Substance intolerances preventing use of Eye Eco products: Sensitivity to the foam on Tranquileyes, allergy to the silicone in the Onyix & Quartz, and so on, are compelling reasons to seek alternatives. A top quality sleep mask is the usual fallback when you strike out with the Eye Eco line.
  • Edema and impressible skin: For some people all shields and goggles will leave marks in the morning no matter how loosely they are worn. A soft mask can be a good alternative.
  • Budget constraints: Sleep masks, even the most expensive ones, are far less expensive than dry eye shields.
  • Back sleepers

Limitations

  • Moisture retention: The Escape, like most high end masks, has a soft cotton knit on the side towards the eyes. Cotton will be more likely to wick away moisture than reflect it back. This is why severe dry eye patients would tend to opt for a goggle or shield (see the Eye Eco category) instead, but you can improve moisture retention in a sleep mask by lining it with plastic wrap.
  • Sizing: This is a wide mask. Pretty much the only complaints I have ever had about this mask have been from ladies with small or narrow faces who found it too large.
  • Side & stomach sleepers: I have mixed results with this mask for side and stomach sleepers. Some love it because it is structured so it stays in place well, others find it too bulky.

Alternatives to consider (see links below)

  • Dreamer - if you're looking for something as thick and soft but less structured, more flexible.
  • Contour and Contour 2 - if you're looking for other masks that will vault the eye area.
  • Eyeseals 4.0 - if you want something to vault high over the eyes but trap moisture as well.

Inside of Mask

The fabric that rests over the eye area and on the face is fully breathable, 100% cotton. Mask is constructed from open-cell, fully breathable, foam padding with cut-outs for the eyes. Plush satin Comfort Bridge™ rests gently across the bridge of the nose to block light.

Outside of Mask

The exterior fabric of the mask is a soft, yet durable micro-plush mink. The outside fabric does not make contact with the face; it simply defines the look and feel of the mask and has been selected specifically to withstand the rigors of travel. We suggest choosing a color that you feel comfortable wearing.

Mask secures around the head with Velstretch, a slim-line and extremely soft elastic band for superior comfort.
