Dr. Mahgoub is doing a lot of good work educating his colleagues about the need for assistive technologies for lens handling. Part of the package when you purchase this product is support for your learning process, so if you are struggling a lot with lens insertion I encourage you to reach out to him. Product and warranty support are all exceptional.

The light

There is an orange/yellow light embedded in the stand. It is very bright and for me, uncomfortably so. Do not make the mistake I did, which was to turn it on before I had added the plunger. Even then, when it's new, personally I find it much too bright. However, I have learned from long-time users of this product that not only does it dim somewhat over time compared to when it's new, but there are also people who like it this bright.

The stand

As you can see in the pic, it's starts with a suction cup, then a durable attachment point, a telescoping thing like a radio antenna, and finally the stand proper, that is, a 4" black thing containing the light and power source plus the orange extension where the scleral cup is placed.

My first step after securing the suction cup to the counter would be to lay a terry towel all round to make sure there's a soft landing. I am a bit paranoid about tall stands, having tested some interesting prototypes from other designers over the years. (I'm always thinking, will my lens fall off and crack? Hence the towel.)

I prefer putting my lenses in standing up rather than seated, so if I actually needed a stand, I'd consider this for myself to use at work. When attached to my desk, I can extend it to 22" and then it's the perfect height for me. The full extended height is almost 30", so it should be OK for the tallest people if they attach it to something counter-height rather than desk-height.

Otherwise, it performs the same function as other stands, as in, the purpose is to hold the lens in a plunger so that you can bring your eye to the lens rather than bringing the lens to your eye.

Description (Manufacturer's)

Click here to download the user manual for the S5 Inserter (or see copy below)

About

The S5 Inserter was developed by Dr. Fayiz Mahgoub to eliminate the challenges that his patients experienced with inserting their scleral and hybrid lenses.
