    Background

If you are an MGD veteran looking for a longer-lasting heat source for your lids, and don't mind dropping a pretty big wad of wash for it, this is a good choice. Simple as that. It combines a large number of advantages in a single product.

A common complaint amongst people trying to diligently follow home lid care instructions is that most compresses just don't seem to last long enough. The fact is, people get understandably frustrated with having to re-heat compresses. Many companies claim their particular brand of compress lasts a full 10 minutes or more at the correct temperature, but in practice, we patients are hard to convince. When we feel it cooling down, many of us assume (though, it must be said, not always correctly) it is not warm enough to help at that point.

Hence, the growing popularity of USB powered compresses that stay warm as long as we want. Personally, I've always been a bit ambivalent about this. I'm not convinced that it's always in everyone's best interest to be applying heat very frequently for long periods. On the other hand, that ship sailed awhile ago and I think that USB masks do offer some advantages that no other type does. So, I've begun stocking some in the shop. I've had several customers mention that they liked the Wizard mask and it was clearly time to try it out.

My personal biggest hangup with any eye compresses is whether the heat makes good enough contact with the eyelid margins. This is why I look for products that have enough weight or some other feature to ensure that they actually reach the lids and conform to the lids. You just can't convince me enough heat is getting in the glands when the heat source is either too far away or has too much stuff sandwiched in between.

So good contact, without having to hold it in place, is the first thing I looked for in the Wizard mask, and honestly, it delivers. At least for me. I will be interested to hear how well it works for people with deep set eyes, whose lids are a bit harder to reach.

This is actually by far the best USB heat mask that I have ever tried out. It's not something I personally feel motivated to use. I prefer the weight to be more spread out so that I don't feel any pressure on my eyes, and while I think my eyes are average depth, someone with more prominent eyes may actually get too much pressure from the Wizard.  But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, generally, to people looking for a heat source that lasts longer and is user-friendly.

    What it's like

It's a skinny little thing, less than 2" top to bottom at the widest. It's fairly thick, with a velvety outer fabric. There is a washable fabric cover which does the job though comfort-wise it isn't anything special. (The cover attaches with velcro at ends and middle.) There is an adjustable elastic strap about 0.75" wide, ample to hold it on securely, and in all it's reasonably comfortable.

The display unit is excellent: nice large high contrast easy-to-read print. But I have to confess it was annoying at first, because the three buttons aren't labeled in ink, just 'embossed' letters in the white plastic. For those of us with less than great vision, it's almost impossible to read without a magnifying glass. But that's easily gotten over in the five seconds or so that it takes to learn to use it, and I understand they intend to improve it.

    Good mask for travel

I tried this mask on the high temperature setting (gave it a few minutes to heat up all the way) and I think it will do the job when travelling where I don't have access to a microwave to heat my regular mask. It will be relaxing to use as it is light weight and comfortable on my eyes and I won't have to get up to reheat it. Like the washable cover too!

Problems for me, probably great for some

Our individual reactions to various relief products are so different - makes it a little difficult, sometimes, to review a product. This compress might be perfect for some folks....but has a huge flaw for me. I tried it thinking it would rest firmly on my eyelids, thus easily allowing the transference of heat to the eyelid margins. Well, it does that, alright, but too much for me - it presses hard enough to affect my vision for 30-60 minutes after removal. Whatever is being used inside for shaping is fairly heavy, so even simply laying the compress over my eyes is too much. Someone with more deeply-set eyes might not experience this.

The heat settings are good, going from nicely warm to fairly hot - and the control for heat and time is easy to use.

Knowing the dangers of too much eyeball compression, I can't really recommend this - maybe future iterations will be able to adjust the pressure in a better manner.
