    Description (by Rebecca)

    Updated December 2024

Purilens Plus Saline has been on the market in 4oz bottles for more than 20 years. It became the go-to "buffered" preservative-free saline after Alcon discontinued Unisol 4 in 2015, and in fact, it was the only solution of its type on the US market until Bausch & Lomb introduced Scleralfil in 2017. (A few years later, Contamac introduced Nutrifill, another type of buffered saline, which is a particular favorite.)

Purilens remains a popular product for many scleral lens users because it is the most cost-effective buffered preservative-free saline. For those who have frequent rinsing needs, it's particularly helpful.

    Alternatives?

    • ScleralFil, a borate-buffered saline which is sold in 10mL single-use vials (box of 30), is the only exact equivalent on the market at present.
    • Nutrifill is a highly rated phosphate-buffered saline with electrolytes.
    • Unbuffered salines such as LacriPure, VibrantVue and the off-label nebulizer salines such as Addipak and Modudose, are options for many users.

    Description (manufacturer's)

Purilens Plus saline solution is preservative-free, pH-balanced, sterile, aqueous isotonic solution of sodium chloride, buffered with boric acid and sodium borate. Does not contain chlorhexidine, thimerosal, or other mercury-containing compounds.

    • pH balanced to eye's natural tears for superior comfort
    • For dry and sensitive eyes
    • For all contact lens wearers
    • contact lens comfort and clarity

    Directions for use

Inside the bottle cap is a molded insert that will pierce the container. To open the bottle, first remove the cap and discard the whit plastic restraining ring. Avoid touching the tip of the bottle. Replace the cap then press down ad turn the cap clockwise to pierce the container.

    Rinse

Rinse, clean, and disinfect your lenses each time you remove them.

Rinse your lens thoroughly with PuriLens solution by holding the lens between the forefinger and thumb of one hand and directing a steady stream of Purines solution onto the lens for ten (10) seconds.

Always rinse the same lens, right to left, first to avoid mix-ups and put that lens into the correct chamber of the lens storage case.

Repeat the procedure for the second lens.

    Great saline product

Thank you for providing this great product. Sterile saline without preservatives is difficult to find. The solution is buffered and is very comfortable to use.

Expensive, but nothing else like it

So for some context: I might be an exceptional case just due to the sheer amount of fluid I need to use throughout the day since my dry eyes also means my sebum is very pasty and requires taking the lenses out multiple times per day. Using the small vials leads to spending $100+/mo just to use lenses, which is painful since I go through a bottle every 2-3 days.

This solution is not only one of the best/most comfortable and longest lasting for me, but I don't have range anxiety with a 4oz bottle of it, and even with saline being pricey all around, this is the best deal out there.

I've bought maybe 10 orders through DES and will continue to do so since there isn't better pricing anywhere else.

My only other complaint is that it's hard to get a clean hole punctured, so once you get low it starts to spray out sideways at random which is frustrating, but I guess that's a relatively small price to pay.

    Great product

I’ve used this product for several years. I am allergic to preservatives in other lens cleaning products so purilens is my go to product.
