    Description (Rebecca's)

First electric mask at Dry Eye Shop in a few years

I had what I guess I would call "false starts" with a couple of USB powered masks. These were each fairly popular. The first retailed for about $100 and had good features. I quit selling that one because there was a pattern of some of them malfunctioning, including heating up too high or failing to shut off, and the manufacturer would replace them but the actual problems never seemed to get resolved. The second was a much lower cost mask which I eventually gave up due to supply chain issues that made its availability unreliable. Then at some point I lost confidence in USB masks altogether because the market (aka Amazon) was being flooded with cheap ones of all descriptions and there did not seem to be any safety standards to help me judge which could be trusted.

So, why am I now stocking an electric mask again?

Simply because this one is coming from a company I can trust. The only part of this that bothers me is I don't like recommending expensive products ($150 is a lot) if I don't also have a lower cost alternative in the same category. In the case of heat masks, I have no cheap electric one to recommend so if you want the budget version, I can only suggest a microwavable mask or an instant heat pack of some kind.

    What it's like

The Blinkjoy heat mask is closely similar to the 2nd Gen sleep mask - same superb quality comfortable fabrics, same general design. Instead of the silicone-covered foam eye cups, this one has heat elements build into the eye cups and their outer covers are fabric. The eye cup positions can still be adjusted somewhat.

There are two heat zones which are controlled independently and each has 3 heat levels. The outer zone is in the raised/cushioned part of the eye cup, where it's resting on your orbital bone but extending towards your eyes, and the inner zone is the receding center of the eye cup, where there's a space between your lids and the heat. This means none of the heated parts are resting directly on your lids. That will mean different things to different people - some do not want the direct contact, others want to max out contact (which in this case would require pressing it closer to your eyes.

The Blinkjoy heat mask is very comfortable and pleasant to use.

The heat controls are intuitive. Just make sure to press and hold for a bit till the first tlight comes on.

    Keeping it clean

The kit includes a machine washable sturdy protective cloth cover shaped like the mask that you can lay over it the mask, and I would recommend using it as the eye cups themselves would not be too easy to keep clean if used directly against your face. I was a little doubtful of the cover before I tried it, due to its two-ply thickness, but it was quite comfortable and worked well. Alternatively, you could use disposable sheets such as the ones Bruder makes, or even just a tissue.

Rebecca's 2 cents about heat therapy and product selections:

There are two potential reasons for people to use heat masks. (Maybe more, but these are the ones I know of personally.)

    1. Comfort reasons - that is, you use it to feel better. In this case, the product choice is all about comfort and convenience entirely on your own terms and of course your budget - from the humble rice bag to the luxurious spa treatment style. Do what feels good. Just... as with anything else, don't buy from scary unknown sellers, and make sure to read and follow instructions.
    2. Medical reasons - that is, you are using it in the belief (hopefully coming from a qualified doctor who has diagnosed and is treating you, as opposed to Facebook) that it may improve the condition of the meibomian (oil-producing) glands in your eyelids, which in turn, you hope, will result in some tangible benefits to your eye symptoms. In this case, you want to pick a product that will be effective and safe (get the job done and not put you at risk) and I would recommend getting your eye doctor's input on product selection as well as frequency and duration of use.

Both of these uses are perfectly legitimate. For some people, heat makes them feel better. For some people, their doctors feels this is what they need; hopefully it also delivers some comfort along the way. But a lot of people aren't very clear in their own minds exactly why they're doing warm compresses, except that they're "supposed to". And among those who are doing it for medical reasons, many don't really know what the goalpost is (if anything). So my suggestion is that if you're seeking medical benefits from heat, keep your doctor involved. Agree on how to do it, how often and how long, and how to determine whether it's delivering the intended benefit.
