    Description (by Rebecca)

    Updated May 2022

Purilens Plus Saline has been on the market for about 20 years. However, it was not nationally known until 2016. When Unisol 4 was discontinued - followed soon after by Simply Saline, another borate-buffered preservative-free saline - Purilens Plus quickly became the go-to product for people seeking buffered preservative-free saline, including for use filling scleral lenses. In fact, it was the only equivalent on the US market until Bausch & Lomb introduced Scleralfil in 2017. (A few years later, Contamac introduced Nutrifill, another type of buffered saline, which is a particular favorite.)

Filling scleral lenses was an "off-label" use of Purilens for. along time, ust as it had been for Unisol 4. Recently, Purilens Plus has been FDA cleared for filling sclerals. At the same time, however, there have been studies that show a concerning level of risk of contamination in open Purilens bottles. Many physicians recommend not using Purilens for filing scleral lenses, at least not more than 48 hours after opening a bottle. Please consult your scleral lens specialist for instructions! Safety matter!

Purilens remains a popular product for many scleral lens users because it is the most cost-effective buffered preservative-free saline. For those who have frequent rinsing needs, it's a particularly helpful product.

    Alternatives?

    • ScleralFil, a borate-buffered saline which is sold in 10mL single-use vials (box of 30), is the only exact equivalent on the market at present.
    • Nutrifill is a highly rated phosphate-buffered saline with electrolytes.
    • Unbuffered salines such as LacriPure, VibrantVue and the off-label nebulizer salines such as Addipak and Modudose, are options for many users.

For more information, please see our Product Guide to Preservative Free Saline Options. Please note that this is not entirely up to date! Please call with questions.

      Limitations

Depending what you are using it for, some users may not use up the entire bottle within the 15 days recommended by the manufacturer. Please put safety first. Preservative-free solutions are not protected against contamination. Ask your scleral lens specialist for guidance!

      Actions

Keeps the lens wet (hydrated) during PuriLens System cleaning and disinfection.

      Indications

PuriLens solution is indicated for use in rinsing, PuriLens system cleaning and disinfection, and storage of SOFT (hydrophilic) contact lenses.

      Contraindictions

      None known.

      Warnings

PuriLens solution is sterile prior to opening. Because it contains no preservatives, it will not remain sterile indefinitely after opening and, therefore, should not be used as an eye drop. Do not touch the tip of the container to any surface since this may contaminate the solution. DO NOT USE IF SOLUTION IS CLOUDY OR DISCOLORED.

      Precautions

      • Do not use if unused, unpierced bottle is damaged and leaking.
      • Never reuse solution
      • Do not transfer saline solution to another container
      • Fresh solution should be used for every cleaning/disinfection cycle
      • Do not store lenses in water, or in a non-sterile solution

      Adverse reactions

      • The following problems may occur
      • Eye stinging, burning, or itching (irritation)
      • Excessive watering (tearing) of the eyes
      • Unusual eye secretions
      • Redness of the eyes
      • Reduced sharpness of vision (visual acuity)

      • Dry eyes

If you notice any of the above problems, remove and examine your lenses. If the problem stops and the lenses appear to be undamaged, rinse your lenses using PuriLens solution, then clean and disinfect the lenses in your PuriLens unit and reinsert them. If the problem continues or a lens appears to be damaged, IMMEDIATELY remove your lenses and IMMEDIATELY consult your eye care practitioner. Do not reinsert a damaged lens.

If any of the above symptoms occur, a serious condition such as infection, corneal ulcer, neovascularization or iritis may be present. Seek immediate professional identification of the problem and treatment to avoid serious eye damage.

      Directions for use

Inside the bottle cap is a molded insert that will pierce the container. To open the bottle, first remove the cap and discard the white plastic restraining ring. Avoid touching the tip of the bottle. Replace the cap then press down and turn the cap clockwise to pierce the container.

      Rinse

Rinse, clean, and disinfect your lenses each time you remove them.

Rinse your lens thoroughly with PuriLens solution by holding the lens between the forefinger and thumb of one hand and directing a steady stream of PuriLens solution onto the lens for ten (10) seconds.

Always rinse the same lens, right to left, first to avoid mix-ups and put that lens into the correct chamber of the lens storage case.

Repeat the procedure for the second lens.

Easy to use -exactly what I need with sclerals

I’ve been using this product now for years. It’s exactly what I need each day to insert my scleral lenses. I use it to rinse the lenses after removal from the lens case, and/or after using a cleanser, and then to fill the lens before insertion.

      Purilens

Great for rinsing. The bottle design is the only one I found with enough pressure to rinse everything off the scleral lens without using bottle after bottle.

      Instructions on bottle are confusing

Good value for preservative free saline, and I prefer the bottle to the vials. Not sure if borate buffered is superior or inferior to the phosphate and electrolyte buffered competition. Only thing hard for me was directions on bottle do not indicate the tip has a plastic cover over it that must be punctured. It says PRESS DOWN on blue cap, but does not say that is what punctures plastic. Some boxes have tape over that area of directions, but a best value in this category for those who spill saline all over, particularly with rinsing lenses.
