    Description (by Rebecca)

Purilens Plus Saline, while it's been on the market for ~15 years, was not well known until relatively recently. It is now the go-to product for people marooned by the 2015 discontinuations of Unisol 4 and Simply Saline. For quite some time, Purilens was the only buffered preservative free saline on the US market, until Bausch & Lomb introduced ScleralFil in 2017, in boxes of 30 10mL vials.

We never actually sold Unisol 4 here at the DryEyeShop, but when Unisol went away and the only viable alternative, Purilens Plus, was not available in drugstores, we began stocking Purilens here as a service to our many customers who use PROSE or scleral lenses. It's been quite an adventure, as those who experienced the severe product shortages in 2016 can attest to! We are thankful that the supply has been steady for a long time now.

ScleralFil, which is sold in 10mL single-use vials, is the only exact equivalent on the market at present. Unbuffered salines (i.e. sodium chloride solution 0.9%) such as LacriPure and the off-label nebulizer salines such as Modudose, are options for many users. We sell all of the different types here. See videos for comparisons.

For more information, please see our Product Guide to Preservative Free Saline Options.

Depending what you are using it for, you may not use up the entire bottle within the 15 days recommended by the manufacturer.

      On and off-label use

Please note that several lens solutions that are routinely recommended by doctors for use with PROSE or sclerals are not labeled that way by the manufacturer so for you this may constitute an 'off label' use. Please make sure your lens provider / eye care professional approves any solution you are using.

Rinsing with PuriLens solution removes loosened debris from the lens surface prior to cleaning and disinfecting with the PuriLens system.

Keeps the lens wet (hydrated) during PuriLens System cleaning and disinfection.

PuriLens solution is indicated for use in rinsing, PuriLens system cleaning and disinfection, and storage of SOFT (hydrophilic) contact lenses.

      None known.

PuriLens solution is sterile prior to opening. Because it contains no preservatives, it will not remain sterile indefinitely after opening and, therefore, should not be used as an eye drop. Do not touch the tip of the contained to any surface since this may contaminate the solution. DO NOT USE IF SOLUTION IS CLOUDY OR DISCOLORED.

      • Never reuse solution
      • Do not transfer saline solution to another container
      • Fresh solution should be used for every cleaning/disinfection cycle
      • Do not store lenses in water, or in a non-sterile solution

      • After breaking the original seal, keep container tightly closed when not in use

      • Adverse reactions
      • The following problems may occur
      • Eye stinging, burning, or itching (irritation)
      • Excessive watering (tearing) of the eyes
      • Unusual eye secretions

      • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
      • Dry eyes

If you notice any of the above problem, remove and examine your lenses. If the problem stops and the lenses appear to be undamaged, rinse your lenses using PuriLens solution, then clean and disinfect the lenses in your PuriLens unit and reinsert them. If the problem continues or a lens appears to be damaged, IMMEDIATELY remove your lenses and IMMEDIATELY consult your eye care practitioner. Do not reinsert a damaged lens.

If any of the above symptoms occur, a serious condition such as infection, corneal ulcer, neovascularization or iritis may be present. Seek immediate professional identification of the problem and treatment to avoid serious eye damage.

      Directions for use

Inside the bottle cap is a molded insert that will pierce the container. To open the bottle, first remove the cap and discard the whit plastic restraining ring. Avoid touching the tip of the bottle. Replace the cap then press down ad turn the cap clockwise to pierce the container.

Rinse, clean, and disinfect your lenses each time you remove them.

Rinse your lens thoroughly with PuriLens solution by holding the lens between the forefinger and thumb of one hand and directing a steady stream of Purines solution onto the lens for ten (10) seconds.

Always rinse the same lens, right to left, first to avoid mix-ups and put that lens into the correct chamber of the lens storage case.

Repeat the procedure for the second lens.

      Great product

I've been using Purilens Plus for use with my PROSE lens since my PROSE lens Dr. Sotomayor,

formerly with Bascom Palmer Eye Inst., recommended it to me from my first visit with her

      perfect for my sensitive eyes

I use this as a filler for my hybrid ultra health FC contact lenses to insert. I have had great wear without issues with this product. So glad it was available to replace Unisol 4. NOTE FROM REBECCA: Thanks for posting! It's been 2.5 years and I'm still mourning the loss of Unisol, but like you thankful the Purilens company could step into their shoes. - Rebecca

I love this product for scleral lenses

I am new to scleral lenses and have had them almost 2 months. I was using the Addipak saline to rinse and insertion but upon insertion, I would feel a tiny bit of a sting. After speaking with Rebecca, she advised that I try using Purilens instead. NO STING upon inserting the lenses!!! What a plus. And I don't know if the Purilens has anything really to do with this, but I found that the lenses don't get cloudy and dirty as often while in my eyes. That is a huge plus for me as I hate taking these lenses out & reinserting them. probably because it's still new to me and they are huge.

      Replaces Unisol 4

I am so glad I found this replacement for Unisol 4. My husband and I were using that product for years with our contact lenses as we are both very sensitive to any chemical additives in the saline.
