    About Systane Lubricant Eye Gel

    • Viscous but non-greasy eye gel
    • Active ingredient hypromellose
    • Contains preservative (sodium perborate - dissipating type known as "preservative-free in the eye")
    • 10g tube (0.34 fl oz)

    Description (by Rebecca)

What I like about gels in general is that they are viscous without being greasy. The vaseline-type ointments are messy, and very difficult to use without problems if you use scleral lenses during the day, because residues inevitably get on the lenses.

    Description (manufacturer's)

SYSTANE® Lubricant Eye Gel offers the thickest gel formulation to coat the eye with a strong layer of dry eye symptom protection. Provides long-lasting, nighttime protection while you sleep. Available in 0.34 oz bottles.

    Not bad, but not fabulous

I decided to try gel eye drops when I realized regular ones weren't really cutting it at night -- I was still waking up with dryness after my goggles had been pushed aside by my pillow enough to make a gap and allow air in. These drops are okay -- they're viscous, and it takes a little while for them to sort of "melt" into my eyes when I first put them in. I was initially using them immediately before lying down, but then had to get up to wipe my eyes after a few minutes because they eventually liquefied and ran down my temples or nose, so I started putting them in maybe 10 minutes before lying down. It takes a little while for my vision to clear enough to read, but then it's fine. And my eyes feel maybe a little better in the morning than they did before I started using these drops, but it's not an amazing difference. I'll continue using them until they're gone, but will probably try a different product after that.
