    Description (Rebecca's)

Purilens Plus Saline, while it's been on the market for ~15 years, was not well known until a few years ago when Unisol 4 and Simply Saline (the only equivalents) were both discontinued. It quickly became the go-to product for people seeking buffered preservative-free saline, including for off-label use filling scleral lenses. For quite some time, Purilens was the only buffered preservative free saline on the US market, until Bausch & Lomb introduced ScleralFil in 2017, in boxes of 30 10mL vials. At this point it is one of several preservative-free saline options, but it remains a top favorite for many scleral lens users for the comfort it provides, the practical packaging and cost-effective size.

We never actually sold Unisol 4 here at the DryEyeShop, but when Unisol went away and the only viable alternative, Purilens Plus, was not available in drugstores, we began stocking Purilens here as a service to our many customers who use PROSE or scleral lenses. It's been quite an adventure, as those who experienced the severe product shortages in 2016 can attest to! We are thankful that the supply has been steady for a long time now.

    Alternatives?

ScleralFil, which is sold in 10mL single-use vials, is the only exact equivalent on the market at present. Unbuffered salines (i.e. sodium chloride solution 0.9%) such as LacriPure and the off-label nebulizer salines such as Modudose, are options for many users. We sell all of the different types here. See video for comparison.

For more information, please see our Product Guide to Preservative Free Saline Options.

    Limitations

Depending what you are using it for, you may not use up the entire bottle within the 15 days recommended by the manufacturer.

    On and off-label use

Please note that several lens solutions that are routinely recommended by doctors for use with PROSE or sclerals are not labeled that way by the manufacturer so for you this may constitute an 'off label' use. Please make sure your lens provider / eye care professional approves any solution you are using.

    Description (manufacturer's)

    Actions

Rinsing with PuriLens solution removes loosened debris from the lens surface prior to cleaning and disinfecting with the PuriLens system.

    Indications

PuriLens solution is indicated for use in rinsing, PuriLens system cleaning and disinfection, and storage of SOFT (hydrophilic) contact lenses.

    Warnings

PuriLens solution is sterile prior to opening. Because it contains no preservatives, it will not remain sterile indefinitely after opening and, therefore, should not be used as an eye drop. Precautions

    • Never reuse solution
    • Do not transfer saline solution to another container
    • Fresh solution should be used for every cleaning/disinfection cycle
    • Do not store lenses in water, or in a non-sterile solution
    • Use before expiration date stamped on container
    • After breaking the original seal, keep container tightly closed when not in use

    • Store solution at room temperature
    • Adverse reactions
    • The following problems may occur
    • Eye stinging, burning, or itching (irritation)
    • Excessive watering (tearing) of the eyes
    • Unusual eye secretions
    • Redness of the eyes
    • Reduced sharpness of vision (visual acuity)
    • Blurred vision

    • Dry eyes

If you notice any of the above problem, remove and examine your lenses. If the problem stops and the lenses appear to be undamaged, rinse your lenses using PuriLens solution, then clean and disinfect the lenses in your PuriLens unit and reinsert them. If the problem continues or a lens appears to be damaged, IMMEDIATELY remove your lenses and IMMEDIATELY consult your eye care practitioner. Do not reinsert a damaged lens.

If any of the above symptoms occur, a serious condition such as infection, corneal ulcer, neovascularization or iritis may be present. Seek immediate professional identification of the problem and treatment to avoid serious eye damage.

    Directions for use

Inside the bottle cap is a molded insert that will pierce the container. To open the bottle, first remove the cap and discard the whit plastic restraining ring. Avoid touching the tip of the bottle. Replace the cap then press down ad turn the cap clockwise to pierce the container.

    Rinse

Rinse, clean, and disinfect your lenses each time you remove them.

Rinse your lens thoroughly with PuriLens solution by holding the lens between the forefinger and thumb of one hand and directing a steady stream of Purines solution onto the lens for ten (10) seconds.

Always rinse the same lens, right to left, first to avoid mix-ups and put that lens into the correct chamber of the lens storage case.

Repeat the procedure for the second lens.

    The covers

I wish they would find a different way to have they open. They never puncture the whole straight and you end up losing half the pin me when cleaning the lenses or use the saline for the lenses. The saline is to expense to be opened this way and wasted.

    DryEyeShop

Thank you for your review. So sorry that you are experiencing this. We recommend reaching out to the manufacturer and seeing if they have further insight on this issue. It doesn't seem to be common. By volume PuriLens is the least expensive for a buffered saline. If you are using it for rinsing only, B&L sensitive eyes seems to be a popular one to use for rinsing in our Facebook group, but please ask your doctor before switching products to make sure they okay it. Let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

    great eye relief

Unlike Unisol, Purilens comes out of the bottle in the direction the bottle is pointed eliminating waste. It is good for both rinsing and using in scleral lens. Also, the manufacturer includes a card saying TSA approved for travel which is essential for getting through TSA checkpoints at airports. The bottle size is too large to use it all in 48 hours. I found using it after 48 hours as a rinse and using Scleral Fill to fill my scleral lens is the most economical.
