Description (by Rebecca)

EyeSeals 4.0 is one of a series of moisture goggles developed by the company Eye Eco. It's a very effective foamless shield that fills some important niches.

How does it compare to Onyix/Quartz? Some key advantages:

  • More versatile sizing (more likely to fit men or anyone with large orbits)
  • Better moisture seal
  • Vaults higher over the eyes (eyelashes won't reach it)
  • Less likely to create skin indentations

On the other hand, a few disadvantages:

  • Larger and bulker
  • Not compatible with all CPAP masks

How does it compare to Tranquileyes? I would say that the moisture retention is almost as good, while it does not require all the maintenance and parts replacements. Plus, it's available in a clear version, so you can leave it on if you get up in the night. As a result, this has been my first recommendation for many new users - because it is so user friendly. Less maintenance, less hassle.

Disadvantage or limitations?

  • Higher cost.
  • Relatively large sizing. May leave gaps on smaller faces.
  • Durability issues.

Bottom line, this product is positioned in my head as "Almost as good as Tranquileyes at the moisture factor, without any of the drawbacks".

Suggested best uses

  • Men. This is the first EyeEco product that fits most men quite well. It may be small for some men with extra large hat size.
  • Tranquileyes candidates. Many people who used to use, or who have been advised to use, Tranquileyes have switched to EyeSeals as a user-friendly alternative that is lower maintenance and does not touch the eye area.
  • Anyone with moderate to severe night dry eye who needs physical barrier protection but does not wanting anything touching their eyelids and/or prefers a transparent product for night use
  • Patients with excessive drying due to inadequate eyelid closure (Bell's palsy, complications from eyelid surgeries, etc). We find these vaulting shields often an effective and more practical option for such patients than products that will hold the lids down.

    Alternatives to consider

Please see our Product Guide: Night Dry Eye Protection Devices for suggested guidelines on product choices.

    Description (from the manufacturer's literature)

    about the product:

Recommended for nighttime use to relieve dry eye, Lagophthalmos, aqueous deficient dry eye, floppy eye syndrome, and recurrent corneal erosions. Can also be used with C-PAP and during air travel.

Soft and flexible, our hydrating eyeseals 4.0™ are made from medical grade thermal plastic, so they rest comfortably over your orbital bones, while leaving room to blink freely.

Made in the USA and 100% latex free, eyeseals 4.0™ are perfect for relieving multiple dry eye-related conditions, wherever the symptoms may strike. Order yours today, and see why thousands of customers trust us with their dry eye therapy.

    included in the kit:

    • One eyeseal™ with secure wrap
    • One gray microfiber storage sack

    Usage and Care

What is EyeSeals 4.0 used for?

EyeSeals 4.0 is a night dry eye protection shield to block drafts and increase humidity around the eyes.

    Instructions for use

Using Eyeseals 4.0™ with Secure Wrap:

Gently clean face and eyelids to remove all dirt and make-up prior to using eyeseals™ 4.0. Your mask is designed to keep moisture in and drafts out. The fit should be comfortable.

Similar to finding your perfect shoe size. Not too tight and not too loose. To avoid tearing the mask, adjust the strap while mask is off the face. Once you find the perfect fit, the wrap is designed to stay put.

For increased moisture during wear, add a few drops of water to inside of eyecups prior to wearing. The combination of moisture, an enclosed space and body heat creates a natural humidifier for the eyes.

    Cleaning and care

To ensure the most comfortable night of rest, wash your mask with mild soap and rinse with warm water prior to wearing. Pat dry with enclosed microfiber bag.

    A Wetsuit for the Eyes

I purchased a pair of these a few years ago in clear and then again recently in charcoal, having forgotten about my experience with the first pair. They're excellent at trapping moisture, so if that is what you need they might be right for you. However I found them unusable for many reasons. Just off the top of my head:

    1) they trap so much moisture it beads up and runs down your face, tickling you and waking you up.

    2) the silicone adheres to your eye sockets and forces your eyelids open.

    3) the dainty silk band only lasts for a few weeks and will eventually break.

    4) the band is also too wide and doubles up on the back of your head, bunching the hair and itching like crazy.

    5) they're absurdly expensive.

If you need protection from exposure, these are likely to be a poor choice. I'm back to wearing my motorcycle goggles to sleep. While the hard shell is uncomfortable, the foam seal and elastic band that stays in place assures reasonable moisture retention and complete exposure protection.

I wish there were ordinary sleep masks available with these features.

    Finally

I had written a review already but wanted to update. I bought a spare one but ended up letting my sister try it. She is now using my spare one and no intention of returning it. So purchased 2 more so we each have a spare. It's great not having to use the ointment anymore and has been no problems not using it. I had been using ointments for over 35 years now and it's so nice not to have to. If it fits your face contour it's a great product. I can still feel how moist my eyes are when I get up now. I got a few more years left in me so hopefully these will keep being made.

    Perfect for me finally

These work perfectly for me. As much as I hesitate to spend the money these save me money. At the price of night time ointment these save me a lot of money. As with the tranquileyes I dislike the strap. Will change to elastic type at some point. I clean mine with Natresen. I put in some eye drops then put these on. Nice to wake up and see right away. Plus I had to stop the ointment as it got on my sclerals lens and made them cloudy. So it was a win win for me. I also use a cpap. Have a Fisher Paykal HC405 mask and it works fine with it. At some point I might try the mist for it. I am thankful for Rebecca and her hard work in keeping us informed about products and information.

    Work well

My 24 years old son is semicomatose with M.E., Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/CFS that affects 20 million worldwide, 1-2 million in US. (Learn more at www.OMF.NGO) Some severely ill patient like my son have ZERO tolerance to light and need 24/7 darkness, so we bought one eyeseal 4, he loved this, so bought a second since he. wears 24/7 and need to wash every 12 hours. However, high humidity 24/7 might lead to increased risks of eye infections and this needs to be consider for any 24/7 users and suspect 24/7 might be risky for eye infections, so we are not trying to wean him off Eyeseals at least overnight NOTE FROM REBECCA: Thank you for posting this. What a difficult situation and I'm so glad if the Eyeseals is working well for your son. This sounds like a very interesting challenge, finding something vented enough for safety in constant use, but solid enough for relief from the extreme light sensitivity. I wonder if it might be possible to do something like perforating the shield (some people do that for similar reasons) but rigging part of a sleep mask above it to keep out light. Anyway please contact me of I can be of any help! - Rebecca

    A Must for Dry Eyes

I would be lost without EyeSeals or the Onyix Silicone Shields. Because my eyes cannot close completely, these products and nighttime ointment is all I have these days. I used to use Tranquileyes, but my eyes became irritated because the sponges were always touching them.

I sew the EyeSeals into a Sweet Dreams Sleep mask to ensure no air can get in at night and it works great. I interchange both products depending on which one I want to use on a particular night.

If you treat both products gently, they will last for a few years with daily use.

Rebecca, I hope you always carry these two products, and the manufacturer continues to make them forever.
