    Description (by Rebecca)

Updated October 2017 - this is a new Eye Eco kit replacing the previous "Advanced XL" kit. Instead of one set of each type of Thermoeyes, this one has three sets of Instant and a set of Beads. It is $79 vs. the original $70 kit, but makes much more sense for frequent users.

Note that you can always purchase more Thermoeyes XL separately (they come in 2-packs).

Beads are handy for heating in hot water without having to reset them. Instants are a nuisance to boil for resetting, but they have the significant advantage of a controlled, sustained temperature.

Night dry eye protection or not?

Standard size Tranquileyes kits can be used both for overnight dry eye protection and warm and cold compresses. The XL sized goggle, however, is not ideal for overnight protection, unless you're a back sleeper. It's so much larger and bulkier than the standard size that it's better suited for compresses than night use.

    Moist compresses

Tranquileyes XL with Thermoeyes inserts is a lovely, luxurious and comfy way to do either warm or cold moist compresses. With Blepharitis and MGD as leading causes of dry eye symptoms, dry eye patients are often advised by their doctors to do some kind of warm compresses regularly for therapeutic benefits, and many do them solely for comfort. Cold compresses are an under-utilized tool but often beneficial for reducing eye pain, soreness, redness, and inflammation. Among all the Tranquileyes product line, I consider the XL size kits to be the best for compresses.

There are many, many ways to do warm compresses, from the conventional warm washcloth to rice baggies to gel and bead-type packs. Your choice of compress may be affected by any number of factors, including:

    • Your doctor's recommendation, first and foremost
    • Skin sensitivities to particular substances
    • Compress size - for example, people with facial rosacea will want smaller compresses that don't heat skin on the face, only the eyelids
    • Duration - if used therapeutically, compresses need to stay warm enough for long enough to do the job
    • Safety - overheated products may burn your lids and eyes
    • Moist vs. dry - opinions will vary as to how much this matters, and preferences vary as well

Tranquileyes with Thermoeyes meets most criteria for most users. Eye doctors tend to be familiar with it, which is an advantage. There is a self-heating version (Instant) with predetermined heat levels. You can use it wet or dry. The heat packs stay warm long enough for a typical treatment time.

Thermoeyes inserts are available in two different types: Beads, which are heated in warm water (you can microwave them in water, though not on their own), and Instant, which are self-heating like hand warmers, but which have to be boiled afterwards to reset them. They each have their advantages, and this combination kit is a great way to try both types so that you'll know which you prefer to use for the long term.

    Description (from the manufacturer's literature)

Our new tranquileyes xl® Advanced kit with Beads & Instants provides at least 510 controlled moist-heat treatments, scientifically proven to provide relief from severe dry eye*.

Our patented tranquileyes xl® delivers the most natural and effective moist-heat home treatment for severe dry eye on the market. The system combines the goggle, reusable gel packs, and water to create 20 to 25 minutes of optimum temperature and humidity, scientifically proven to loosen oils in the Meibomian glands and relieve symptoms. Clogged glands are the number one contributor to severe evaporative dry eye (MGD). The larger XL uses gel packs 30% larger than tranquileyes®, allowing for an extended compress duration, required for severe MGD. Use tranquileyes xl® for immediate and long-term relief from severe dry eye, MGD or blepharitis.

Resting over the orbital bones, the XL moist-heat promotes circulation and speeds heat transfer, delivering controlled temperature between 102-110°F degrees.

The XL is also used to create cold therapies for managing eyelid and under-eye puffiness, inflammation and ocular allergies.

Interchanging thermoeyes® Beads and thermoeyes® Instants allow you flexibility in choosing the treatment type that best works with your day.

    Made in USA.

    Usage and care

    How to use

    (from manufacturer's literature)

To prepare moist-heat therapies, microwave the Beads in their fabric pockets and mesh bag in 1 cup of water for 45 seconds. Let stand for 1 minute and place inside goggles.

If you prefer to use the Instants, simply activate them by clicking the disc inside the gel pack back and forth until it starts generating heat. Place Instants inside moistened fabric pockets and into the back of the goggle. Don’t forget to boil the gel packs after each use for 2-3 minutes to reset them.

For cold treatments, insert Instants or Beads with fabric pockets into the back of the goggle. Place the goggle in a self-sealing plastic bag and leave in the freezer for 15-20 minutes.

You can also sleep with the goggle and moisten the black foam inserts to increase humidity around the eyes.

    Care instructions

    (from manufacturer's literature)

Hand wash black foam inserts and white fabric pockets with mild soap and warm water after each use. Rinse well, squeeze out extra moisture and air dry in enclosed mesh bag. Wash plastic eye covers with foam attached in the same way, as needed. Foam (outer cushion and inner pad) should be replaced periodically, typically after 60 uses.

Precaution: This product has been designed to be used solely to facilitate eye comfort during rest or sleep and is not to be used for any other purpose. It is not intended to be used as protective eyewear. For your safety, do not drive, operate machinery, or attempt to walk around while using this product.

    Works as Expected

I have had so much comfort from using your product. I also use eye drops as suggested by my ophthalmologist but the warm, moist compress just adds another layer to my treatment of dry eyes. The (over) tearing has reduced greatly. The care of this product is quite easy. I read other reviews and followed their advice of placing the gel packets into my tea kettle, and it's so easy.

One more thing, I started using these during meditation and found that it adds another level of relaxation. Now I can't imagine NOT using them during that time.

    Best product ever!

Nothing gives me relief like Tranquileyes. I prefer the XL size because I have big eyes and it covers everything. I have auto-immune MGD, and my dry eye is very bothersome. I feel so much better when I use this regularly. Also, it doesn't have to be a nuisance. I don't boil my Tranquileye Instants. Instead, I drop them in an electric kettle filled to capacity, push the 'on' button, and walk away. When the water cools, I have my nice, fresh Tranquileye Instants all ready to go. If I feel they aren't soft enough, I repeat the process. I haven't overcooked one, and this is super easy. :)

The BEST product I've used, hands down, and an easy way to manage without boiling on the stove!

I have chronic dry eye from autoimmune disease. Sixty-seventy percent of my meibomian glands are dead and will not recover. I need to take excellent care of the remaining glands and that means applying moist heat once to twice daily. I use a lot of the blue Tranquileyes Instants which are soothing and effective. I keep an electric kettle on the counter in our bathroom and when I have eight or so ready to be reheated, I fill it to the brim, turn it on, and walk away. It only took a few tries to figure out how much water to put in. When the water cools, I take out my nice, soft Instants and am all ready to go! Easy-peasy.

So soothing, the best mask I've found to date.

Super comfortable, easy to use. I wanted something that didn't require a microwave. I keep it by my bed and use it first thing in the morning. The moist heat of this mask gives me the most relief of any product I use including two other heat masks, a moisture retention mask at night, various eye drops and gels, and various eye lid wipes. It's like a big sigh of relief for my eyes. I have MGD and many other eye issues. I'd buy it again, for sure!

Okay but a lot of work

I have been using a microwave microbead eye mask that I got in Walgreens. It heats up quickly. This product is very nice but there is a lot more work to maintain it with boiling the disks. It is a moist heat as opposed to the dry heat of the microbead eye mask.
