This is our first summer in our current house, and it's been so much fun to see what comes up. I did not feel ambitious enough to do much more than plant some veggies and I'm glad I held off so I could just enjoy to the full what's already here.
I delight in the daisies. There are seas of them in the backyard.

There's a wonderful clump of dahlias, which came as a surprise. When Chaidie was young we used to visit a dahlia garden cultivated at the post office in the next town over (Silverdal) which must have had at least 150 varieties.

Then there are the hydrangeas. They are completely and utterly overwhelming - masses and masses of them piled up against the back of the house just begging to be cut severely back. Well, for one summer I'm going to enjoy them as they are. There is just something so endearing about these giant, fluffy, lighthearted flowerheads.

This is the view facing away from the house towards sunset. There is a tiny bit of the Olympic mountains visible here (further up, on the deck, you can see a bit of Hood Canal). I just love the sun filtering through this time of year.

Shasta Daisies and California Poppies have always been my favorite flowers. Growing up in California meant they were part of my genetic makeup. Living in NC for the last 48 years has been tough; those two wildflowers don’t like the growing conditions in the Piedmont. I miss seeing them this time of year along the hills of the Pacific Coast. Thank you so much for sharing your photos. They bring me a little bit of home every so often and it makes me happy.
