Genteal Tears backorder

We learned recently that Genteal Tears PF has gone on extended manufacturer backorder with no expected in-stock date.

So, some of you may be looking for the closest alternatives.

Genteal Tears vs Bion Tears

The only eye drop in the US that is closely similar to Genteal Tears is another "oldie but goodie": Bion Tears

Same active ingredients

Genteal Tears and Bion Tears have the same two active ingredients and in the same concentrations:

  • Dextran 70 0.1%
  • Hypromellose 2910 0.3%

Different inactive ingredients

When it comes to inactive ingredients, they're quite different, but neither eye drop contains anything in the inactives that is likely to make it feel very different (thinner, thicker etc). Both are old-school lubricant drops and that means that everything on the inactive list really IS an inactive ingredient:

  • Genteal Tears: Potassium Chloride, Purified Water, Sodium Borate, Sodium Chloride, May contain: Hydrochloric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide
  • Bion Tears: Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, purified water, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, zinc chloride, hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide and/or carbon dioxide to adjust pH.

Here's a useful article to help understand inactive ingredients in lubricant drops.
