  • Soft clear vinyl shield
  • Foam lining
  • Fits under glasses
  • Available small (40x60 mm) or large (50x70 mm)

Description (Rebecca's)

This is a very simple, moderate quality product. Do not expect it to last long! But for the right person, it may be a very important tool, particularly for temporary use.

Who is the right person? I would say definitely a lot of the folks with Bell's Palsy anyone suffering from corneal exposure due to facial paralysis or a non-closing eyelid. There is such a lack of patches for an exposed eye! The most effective ones are the adhesive bubble patches i.e. NITEYE, Ortolux, but they're hard on the skin and very expensive. Then there's Solo Shields, but they are vented, and the foam is stiff so they are not very versatile on the fit, and if you want it to be a moisture chamber you'd have to tape over the holes. So this Pro-Moisture Chamber patch fills an important little niche.

Basics

The cover: The front part is a very soft, flexible clear plastic. The picture doesn't quite do it justice - you can't tell whether it's clear or frost. It's definitely clear.

The foam: The patch is edged with a soft white foam about 8mm thick. That won't sound like much, but because the plastic is flexible, it flexes to seal pretty well, assuming the size is a good fit. When I say the foam is "soft" I don't mean soft to the touch particularly but rather very squishy (unlike the much denser foam on the Solo Shield, for example). It's reasonably soft to the touch, but if you have very sensitive skin, I could easily see it becoming irritating if worn for too long or too frequently.

The strap: Skinny single strand elastic. It is not adjustable, although you could tie a knot in it if you wanted to shorten it.

Sizing: Get the large if you're not sure. The small size seems most likely to fit children or adults with small eyes and heads.

 Benefits

Limitations

  • Reasonably comfortable
  • Fits under glasses
  • Allows for good vision when worn
  • Keeps eye protected
  • Foam quality / comfort
  • Strap quality / comfort
  • Durability

My experience testing it

I absolutely hate wearing anything on my head during the day other than glasses, so I hate testing things like this. When I tried it out, I had just tried on several other items from the same manufacturer and was feeling distinctly grumpy. Then I put this on and was like... wow, really? I was impressed in spite of myself.

When I tried on the small one, it was definitely too small for me - it fit too close to my eye, and the strap was too short, so it really dug in. I didn't leave it on long but I was impressed that it didn't appear to interfere with my vision - I mean, I barely knew it was there. Then I put a pair of glasses on over it. It didn't change the comfort, and I could still see fine. Only, it fit too close to my eye so my lashes brushed up against it, and because it fit too close, it was uncomfortable.

So then I switched to the large. Much better fit for me. I left this one on for several hours, and I wore my glasses over it for a lot of that time. I could kind of see the foam on this one (especially towards the nose) but it definitely didn't seem to obscure my vision at all. I'm still really impressed that I could wear this on my right (dominant) eye, under glasses, and still see decently. It fogged only minimally. (Your mileage may vary.)

What about longer term needs?

There still really isn't anything on the market that I know of that is good enough quality to offer frequent all-day protection for a single eye without adhesive. My recommendation for longer term needs is moisture chamber glasses. Ziena Eyewear are the best of those in terms of balancing form with function. Give us a call for more guidance.

Works very well under eyeglasses

I’ve enjoyed using this product. Since having to wear a mask the air blowing out of it dried my eyes something fierce. With this product it is no longer an issue. I’ve held up one star just for the aesthetics. Since I’m wearing it out I wish it were more invisible. How wonderful it would be if it were in a nude color. Other than that it’s been a blessing.

Met my low expectations

Ordered the patch to augment my arsenal of dry eye support/supplies, specifically to use while riding my bicycle outside as the opaque patches provide protection, but also challenges in traffic. Ultimately, the fit was too uncomfortable under my vision and sun glasses. Rebecca provided fine description, figured price was reasonable to at least try....returned two of the three I purchased and will continue to search for the best one for me.
