What is it?

Gentledrop is a simple silicone device that fits around an eye drop bottle. It has a saddle that rests on your nose bridge and holds the bottle in position over one eye so you can apply a drop. Then you rotate the whole thing to apply a drop to the other eye.

What's the point?

Gentledrop is meant to help you aim drops correctly onto the eye. For those with chronic difficulty instilling drops, this can help with:

• preventing mess and/or skin irritation from frequent misses
• reducing waste and saving on costs
• ensuring you don't run out of an Rx med before you're eligible for a refill

Ease of use?

There are three aspects to this: 

1. Getting Gentledrop on and off of your bottle. This is bottle-specific (see below).
2. Positioning Gentledrop on your nose. Seems perfectly straightforward to me, but I'm anxious to hear what actual users are going to say. It naturally fits in such a way that the dropper tip really is exactly where it should be for me, without me thinking at all. On the other hand, I do not know what this will be like for people with low nose bridges, so if you try it, do tell, and I'll update this description accordingly.
3. Applying drops. Again, this is bottle-specific.

Standard multi-dose bottles

This means the classic bottle style used for most eye drops containing preservatives

A classic 15mL bottle scoots in very easily regardless of your dexterity. Gentledrop is stretchy and has a curved part that holds snugly to the "shoulders" of the bottle.

If you are using multiple bottles daily, of course it will be more convenient to get one device per bottle, but I don't think it would be a hardship to switch it from one to another - so long as they are 15mL.

I haven't had the opportunity to test 30mL or 5mL. 30mLs are fatter so may be a little harder. 5mL should be just like 15 but it will sink further into the device, meaning you won't be able to squeeze the bottle directly - you'll have to squeeze the Gentledrop, which means squeezing harder.

Works butI found it a bit problematic. If I slide it down far enough for it to grip the bottle reliable and not slip around, there's barely enough of the bottle end sticking out to squeeze, so I end up having to squeeze the device itself over the bottle - fine for, me, but probably not great for people with arthritis because of the added force needed.

Multi-dose preservative-free bottle (Novelia type)

This bottle type is used by Systane (all PF types), Optase DEI, Oasis (all PF types). Learn more

Seemed to me that it is the most compatible of the MDPF bottles. Easy to put on and it seemed to grip the bottle reasonably well. Enough of the tip stuck out for squeezing. However, as the bottle empties and requires more pressure to squeeze, it seems to me you would have to squeeze it further up meaning squeeze the device too..

Multi-dose preservative-free bottle (ABAK type)

Definitely possible if you're motivated, but you'll have to push hard, you'll want to put it on only once, and be aware the drop is going to fall further out towards the outer corner of your eye because it's a taller bottle with a tall cap.

Some context around this product category

Small devices, like eye drop installation tools and some scleral lens insertion and removal tools, are challenging product categories for Dry Eye Shop. On the one hand, these types of products are sorely needed. On the other hand, our commitment to upholding strong product safety standards means we want everything we sell to be properly registered with the FDA so that (among other reasons) any adverse events can be tracked. Depending on device type, FDA registration may be quite a costly process, beyond the reach of very small or casual "idea-preneurs" who have identified an important unmet need but who are trying to bring their product to market alone on a tight budget. So, sometimes we have to make judgment calls based on the need, but we usually try to stay on the straight and narrow, and we always encourage people with good ideas to partner with companies that have the infrastructure to 'do it right'. In the case of Gentledrop, it's exempt from approval process but is properly FDA-registered.

What is Gentledrop?

Gentledrop is a doctor-invented eye drop guide that rests gently on the bridge of your nose. This physical anchor absorbs shakiness and helps eliminate the stress of guesswork of hovering a bottle over your eye. 

Which bottles does Gentledrop fit?

Gentledrop is designed with a flexible opening that slips over the vast majority of standard prescription and over-the-counter eye drop bottles. It is highly versatile and is also fully compatible with other specialized eye drop aids, like the Nanodropper. The primary factor that determines compatibility is bottle volume: Gentledrop fits 5,10 & 15 mL traditionally-shaped cylindrical bottles, as well as non-cylindrical/oblong 2.5 mL bottles (e.g. Xalatan)

How many Gentledrops do I need? 

Gentledrop is a washable and reusable device that you never have to replace or throw away. For convenience and usability, we recommend purchasing one Gentledrop per bottle of in-use medication. 

For example, if you use 2 different medications, purchase 2 Gentledrops to avoid needing to transfer the device between each dose. When the bottle is empty, you can remove the Gentledrop and transfer it to your next bottle. 

Directions for use

Step 1: Insert eye drop bottle through the large bottom hole of Gentledrop. The eye drop bottle should fit snugly against the top small hole.

Step 2: Remove cap from bottle

Step 3: Lie flat and rest your heat on a pillow or chair. Lift your chin so your head is flat. If drops land on your cheek, tilt your head back further. (Once you are a Gentledrop expert this step is easier.)

Step 4: Align Gentledrop on the bridge of your nose. It may help to have a friend or family member watch your positioning. 

Step 5: Optional: Create a larger pocket to receive a drop by looking up and pulling your lower eyelid down.

Step 6: Squeeze Gentledrop. Press the bottom edge of Gentledrop into the bottle to most easily get out a drop.
