Who is Rebecca?

Muro 128 Ointment is NOT equivalent to the lubricating ointments sold here (e.g. Refresh PM, Systane PM, Soothe PM, Optase Hylo Night). 

Muro 128 is a hypertonic ointment, and while it's sold over-the-counter, it's intended for use only when advised by an eye doctor. It is indicated for corneal edema. In our little corner of the world, it's often used by people suffering from recurrent corneal erosions (RCE), which is why we're stocking it here.

Muro 128 is sold in two forms - drops, or ointment. We only stock the ointment here as we don't think there is much demand for the drop among our customer base, but do let us know if you feel we should stock them.

Uses

Temporary relief of corneal edema

Warnings

For external use only

Do not use

except under the advice and supervision of a doctor

When using this product

  • it may cause temporary burning and irritation
  • replace cap after use
  • to avoid contamination, do not touch tip of container to any surface

Stop use and ask a doctor if you experience any of the following:

  • condition worsens or persists for more than 72 hours
  • you experience eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation of the eye

Keep out of reach of children.

If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

Directions

  • pull down the lower lid of the affected eye
  • apply a small amount (1/4 inch) of ointment to the inside of eyelid
  • apply every 3 or 4 hours or as directed by a doctor

Other Information:

  • store upright at 15-25 degrees Celsius or 59-77 degrees Fahrenheit
  • keep tightly closed
  • DO NOT FREEZE
  • see crimp of tube or carton for Lot Number and Expiration Date
  • do not use if difficult to dispense or visible particles are seen in the product
  • serious side effects associated with use of the product may be reported to the number provided below

Excellent

I first used this product 15 years ago when I had a corneal tear that became an ulcer. It was remarkable. After I developed severe dry eye in 2022 it was the only ointment that really helped my eyes. I trued a couple of others and they were ok but this one was the most comfortable. I use it at night and sometimes during the day.

A little hesitant to do so, but I celebrate this addition to Dry Eye Shop's offerings

I've had DES for 25+ years now (and before this disclosure freaks anyone out, let me disclose that for many of those years, my symptoms went fairly quiet, but not without daily use of FreshKote, the unique OTC high oncotic pressure drop based on the work of the glorious (and now departed) Dr. Frank Holly). It was Rebecca who introduced me to the magic of Dr. Holly's work (no surprise there!). Just when COVID hit in early 2020, a silicone punctal plug I'd been sporting since 2001 (yes -- for 19 years -- truly) suddenly fell out, and this triggered a flare of symptoms that did not go away even after replacement of that plug. Something new must have been brewing. I found a terrific new optometrist well versed in DES, and after ruling out any visible recurrent corneal erosion and concluding that I was probably at a stage when neuropathic ocular surface pain was setting in (and after we opted against scleral lenses for someone like me), she quietly and mischievously asked whether anyone had ever suggested I try Muro 128 5% ointment. And no, none of the probably 15 or more ophthalmologists I had been seen by, over nearly 25 years, had dared suggest this product, and I always assumed this was because of Muro's specific chronic-use indication of corneal edema usually associated with corneal dystrophies, and not garden-variety MGD-triggered DES like mine. My new doc urged me to try a very, very small dab of Muro ointment nightly to see what would happen, after she confidently…
