This drop is truly new, not just "new to the US" (i.e. part of the accelerating migration of dry eye products from Europe to the US). How often do we get a completely new eye drop... not very!

Optase MGD is, in effect, a sort of dry eye "combo drop". While glycerin is nominally the active ingredient, a cardinal unwritten and unspoken rule of artificial tears in the US is that the interesting stuff frequently gets tucked in the inactive ingredient list*. Optase MGD is a classic example.

  • Sodium hyaluronate. Oasis was the first example of a sodium hyaluronate drop on the US market but by now almost every major brand has a drop containing it.
  • Trehalose. This is best known in a European drop called Thealoz Duo (which, speaking of the migration, recently came to the US under the brand Ivizia), but trehalose also exists in Refresh Optive Mega and Theratears Extra.
  • Sacha Inchi Seed Oil, making this (or so I gather) reasonably describable as a lipid drop. There aren't too many of those in the US - Retaine MGD being the most notable one, although it is certainly not directly comparable.

Anyway, ingredients aside, the proof is always in the proverbial pudding. As we know in the dry eye world, everything works for someone and nothing works for everyone. If you try this let me know what you think, especially in comparison to other drops with any similar ingredients.

*This is in order to comply with dinosaur-era FDA regulations about artificial tears, otherwise known as the OTC Monograph (specifically for ophthalmic demulcents and emollients). In 2020, a law was changed that brings at least some hope of this eventually changing.

Comfortable

My eyes feel comfortable using these drops at night (I wear scleral lenses in the day & don’t need drops during the day). I had been using different nighttime eye drops. I wanted to try something new to see if different eye drops gave me any better relief. I have been using Optase MGD Advanced for a couple of weeks, and these make my eyes feel more comfortable than the other drops I had been using.

As noted by others, as the bottle gets closer to empty, it does take more pressure to squeeze out the drops. This has not been a problem for me. (This might be an issue for others?) I am happy I gave these a try.

Great, thicker alternative to Systane complete

These are great bed-time drops. I really like them for night time before i put my eye mask on. I wouldn't use them for daytime because they are somewhat thick. But I like them better than the Systane Complete for night time, which previously was my favorite.

Because they are thick, the dropper takes a little getting used to, but the liquid doesn't slide down the side like the systane does.

Love this! I’ve been using it for 2 weeks and my eyes feel much more comfortable. I wish I could have found it sooner.

Very hydrating

I’ve used Systane, Xiidra, and Tyrvaya in the past but none are as hydrating as Optase MGD. This drop is very soothing and effective and it does not result in excess tearing. The only negative is that the oddly shaped dropper takes some practice and skill to use toward the end of the bottle.
