Rebecca's description
Purilens Plus Saline has been on the market in 4oz bottles for more than 20 years. It became the go-to "buffered" preservative-free saline after Alcon discontinued Unisol 4 in 2015, and in fact, it was the only solution of its type on the US market until Bausch & Lomb introduced Scleralfil in 2017.
What people use Purilens for
Rinsing sclerals: Purilens is great for those who are new to sclerals and need extra saline while refining their insertion and removal skills, or for anyone who needs a lot of saline for rinsing off cleaning solutions or while removing/rinsing and re-inserting lenses during the day. Using a bottle is more convenient than individual vials. For your safety, don't stretch it beyond the 14 days.
Rinsing soft contacts: Purilens is popular for rinsing off the solution that daily contact lenses come packaged in. However, the bottles tend to get used for too long. This is a preservative-free multi-use bottle which can easily get contaminated, and rinsing lenses with contaminated solution increases your risk of infection. So, if you are a soft lens user, I recommend the 2oz bottles (discard after 14 days) or switch to single-use vials.
Filling sclerals: Purilens is the cheapest buffered (pH balanced) preservative-free saline. Please consult your provider about whether it is suitable for filling your lenses, as some providers have concerned about using this up to the full 14 days that it is labeled for. While this is part of the formal product labeling, scleral lens users tend to be higher risk, so your doctor's input is important.
Careful!
NEVER soak your lenses in Purilens! Storing contact lenses in preservative-free solutions is a risk factor for Acanthamoeba keratitis.
Alternatives?
ScleralFil, a borate-buffered saline which is sold in 10mL single-use vials (box of 30). ScleralFil has the same ingredients as Purilens.
Unbuffered salines such as LacriPure and the off-label nebulizer salines such as Addipak and Modudose, are options for many users.

If you notice any of the above problems, remove and examine your lenses. If the problem stops and the lenses appear to be undamaged, rinse your lenses using PuriLens solution, then clean and disinfect the lenses in your PuriLens unit and reinsert them. If the problem continues or a lens appears to be damaged, IMMEDIATELY remove your lenses and IMMEDIATELY consult your eye care practitioner. Do not reinsert a damaged lens.
If any of the above symptoms occur, a serious condition such as infection, corneal ulcer, neovascularization or iritis may be present. Seek immediate professional identification of the problem and treatment to avoid serious eye damage.
Directions for use
Inside the bottle cap is a molded insert that will pierce the container. To open the bottle, first remove the cap and discard the white plastic restraining ring. Avoid touching the tip of the bottle. Replace the cap then press down and turn the cap clockwise to pierce the container.
Rinse
Rinse, clean, and disinfect your lenses each time you remove them.
Rinse your lens thoroughly with PuriLens solution by holding the lens between the forefinger and thumb of one hand and directing a steady stream of PuriLens solution onto the lens for ten (10) seconds.
Always rinse the same lens, right to left, first to avoid mix-ups and put that lens into the correct chamber of the lens storage case.

Scleral Lens Life Saver
I have keratoconus and wear scleral lens, and this was recommended to me by my specialist. It was a way to get more product for greater value. I was using initially single use which was killing me with the cost. I have to put in and out sclerals multiple times a day, and having single use saline was not feasible financially. This was a great method for me to continue to use the saline. I was advised to never use longer than 14 days, and to always keep clean. One bottle usually last me a week. It is my favorite product for my sclerals, and is buffered, so it feels really nice on my eyes. Other filling solutions can sometimes feel harsh or cause itching, but this one worked out great for me. For a single use alternative, scleralfil is very similar. It was an easy budget replacement for scleralfil.

Purilens Plus 2 oz.
I like the solution but the bottle is not my favorite. I puncture the lid as directed but the liquid direction is all over the place. I would prefer that the puncture directs the liquid in a consistent stream.
